Sustainable Modular Roofing

About the Project

ReMaterials is a social enterprise that converts waste into roofing materials. Our team is working with the startup to help them identify a primary market, develop a plan for manufacturing the roofing panels, identify appropriate sales channels, and prototype new product features.

How Soap and Chalk Can Make Slum Roofing Waterproof Making roofs out of recycled material is a pretty cool concept, except that recycled materials tend to soak up water like a sponge. This means that waterproofing is crucial to maintaining the strength and integrity of the material. Currently waterproofing is done using perflourinated compounds. These are great waterproofing agents but unfortunately, really bad for your health. They are carcinogenic, endocrine disruptors, and unbelievably recalcitrant and bioaccumulative. That’s why the Center for Green Chemistry at UC Berkeley is working on a non-toxic solution to waterproofing ReMaterials’ tiles. By acidifying sodium stearate (soap to you and me) and neutralizing it with lime (that’s burnt chalk), you can make calcium stearate. This non-toxic chemical makes a great non-soluble water repellent with its long hydrophobic chains.
